40 Days of Hope
Wednesday, March 13
Again, on our trip to Israel, we explored the ancient town of Capernaum. It was quite surreal to me. Walking the ancient paths cut through rows and rows of houses, I could just sense the import of this community. Archaeologists have discovered an ancient synagogue dating back to the 4th century in Capernaum. However, that building is built upon a more ancient synagogue which dates back to the 1st century.
So, I spent a long time standing in the ruins of that synagogue. I was standing in the very spot where Jesus delivered the teachings recorded in John 6:25-59. Simon Peter’s house is in this town as well. It has been located by researchers and is not too far from the synagogue. Again, it was a memorable experience to walk through the ancient ruins of this town so closely connected to the Galilean ministry of Jesus.
The crowds were still following Jesus in our reading for today. They knew he did not get in the boat with the disciples the evening before. They were perplexed and asked, “How did you get here?” Jesus brushed off their question and began to teach. He challenged His hearers to work just as hard for the Kingdom of God as they did in their earthly jobs.
The crowd asked Jesus a sincere question: What must we do to do the works God requires?” Jesus responded with the challenge of faith: The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”
Following Jesus is a journey of faith. He continues to challenge us to believe in Him. We are to put our faith in Him. This leads to a life that glorifies God. It leads to a life of eternal reward. As a follower of Jesus, keep putting your faith in Him!
Reflect on your own faith journey. What are some ways you are trusting Jesus today?
