Now we are in the heart of the sermon delivered by Jesus in the synagogue in Capernaum. My former pastor used to say, “This is where the water hits the wheel!”
The context for the sermon is the Passover Season in Israel. The people of God had been reflecting on the ancient story of God’s deliverance of His chosen ones from Egypt. Jesus reminded His hearers that God gave the Israelites “bread from heaven” to eat (verse 31). Keep in mind that many of the people in the synagogue that day had been on the mountainside when Jesus performed the miracle of feeding the 5,000.
Jesus moved on in the sermon to proclaim that God gives bread that gives life to all the world. The people cried out, “Give us this bread” (John 6:34). Jesus boldly declared, “I am the bread of life . . . I am the bread that came down from heaven!”
Jesus confidently claimed that His ministry was heaven-directed. He was on earth to only do the will of the Father. Those who will accept Him as God’s gift to humanity will receive the gift of eternal life. He will redeem the people of God and will raise them up on the day of the resurrection. God had provided manna for the ancestors of Israel, but they died. Now, God is providing true Bread from Heaven, and those who eat this Bread will live forever!
No one had ever delivered a sermon in that synagogue like this one! In fact, the people even said, “Isn’t this Jesus --- the son of Mary and Joseph? He is from Nazareth, not heaven” (John 6:42). Undaunted by their doubts, Jesus continued to preach. He is the true Bread from Heaven. Belief in Him will lead a person to eternal life.
So, there you have it. These are bold claims. And they are true claims. Jesus really is the Bread of Heaven. He is the only One who can give us the gift of eternal life. He alone is the Savior of the world!
Jesus has given you the precious gift of eternal life! Thank Him today.
