The Great High Priest
Obviously, the Book of Hebrews is filled with imagery from Judaism. This is a very Hebraic document! This passage reflects the deep connection to the Jewish faith. The writer of Hebrews draws upon his rich knowledge of the life of Israel under the Old Covenant.
The High Priest played a unique role in the expression of Judaism in the Old Testament context. This leader of God’s people stood in God’s presence on behalf of all Israel on the Day of Atonement. Only the High Priest was allowed access to the Holy of Holies in the Tabernacle or the Temple. And he could enter on that one day of the year.
The writer of Hebrews emphasizes the High Priestly role of Jesus in the life of God’s people under the New Covenant. He has not just entered the Most Holy Place in the Temple --- He has entered the very presence of God Himself in heaven!
Further, Jesus faced all manner of temptation just like all earthly priests. However, He never failed once! He never gave in to sin. He emerged from each possible situation of failure by being victorious over sin. He is the only sinless One in all of history.
No wonder the writer refers to Jesus as the “Great” High Priest!
Because we have such a Great High Priest, we too have access to the Father. We can boldly enter into the presence of Almighty God because of the work of Christ. We don’t have to wonder if God will welcome us. We don’t have to fear rejection. We can confidently and humbly approach God’s throne of grace. His grace is available to us, and we can claim it in the Name of Jesus!
God’s grace is available to us just when we need it most: in our times of need.
Praise God for our Great High Priest!
Enter into God’s presence today. Receive His grace. Thank Him for the Great High Priest --- Jesus Christ!
