Forgiven and Cleansed
1 John 1:8-2:2
One day my Mom was headed to the store. It had been raining and our back yard was pretty muddy. She told us when she left, “It is too muddy to play out in the back yard today. You boys stay in the house until I get back from the store.”
Well, you probably can guess what happened. My buddies showed up with their older brothers—and we all headed outside to play football in the yard. I will never forget seeing the front bumper of Mother’s car appearing in the driveway. I made a mad dash to beat her in the house. I didn’t make it!
She looked at me and I said, “I’m sorry, Mom.” I was covered in mud. She broke out into laughter (I think I was so cute), and said, “Let’s get inside and get you cleaned up.” She forgave me instantly, but it took about 30 minutes to get me cleaned up!
In this text, John shares some powerful truths with us. We are sinners. Even when we are seeking to walk in the Light. We will fail. We will fall short. We will break fellowship. We will need God’s help. The good news is that God stands ready to help!
John lets us know that the blood of Jesus has been shed on our behalf. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins. He is our Advocate before the Father. So, we can confess our sins and trust that God will forgive us. And if we yield ourselves to Him, He will also lead us in a process of cleansing. Forgiveness may be immediate --- but purifying may take a while (kind of like a mom cleaning up a little mischievous son!).
Jesus Christ has made provision for the whole world to discover the forgiveness of God (1 John 2:2). His death on the cross is sufficient for all of us. We just need to put our faith in Him and commit ourselves to walk in His light.
Jesus Christ is the Light of the World. His light exposes the darkness of our lives and confronts us with the reality of our sinfulness. His light offers us a path to righteous living. His personal touch in our lives gives us hope in the face of our sinful condition. He can lead us out of darkness into His marvelous light, and we can have fellowship with Him every day. Praise God!
Do you need to confess your sin today? Give God an opportunity to forgive and cleanse you so that your fellowship with Him may be sweet!
