The New Covenant
The God of the Bible is a covenant-making God. He desires to live in community with His people. He has invited His people to relate to Him in the context of covenantal expressions. The covenant with Abraham gave definition to the relationship between God and Abraham’s descendants (Israel).
Many years later, speaking through the prophet Jeremiah, God described a new future for His people. God promised He would establish a “new covenant” with His people (Jeremiah 31:31-37). This covenant would be written on the hearts and minds of the people rather than on stone tablets.
For centuries, God’s people waited for the day when these words would find fulfillment. Certainly, these expectations were connected to Messianic hopes. As the Jews waited for their Messiah, they also longed for the day when God would fulfill all of His long-anticipated promises.
Fast forward to the earthly ministry of Jesus. His life, teachings, and ministry were all fulfilments of Messianic prophecy. Not everyone immediately recognized the way in which Jesus accomplished this. However, the Gospel writers were all quick to point out the Messianic fulfillment in His ministry.
Sometimes, Jesus was very direct in announcing God’s promises were now realized in Him. For example, on one occasion, He read from the Messianic passage Isaiah 60 in the synagogue in Nazareth. After completing the reading, He sat down and said, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing” (Luke 4:21). Wow!
With regard to our text today, the writer of Hebrews declares that Jesus is the mediator of the new covenant promised in Jeremiah. This is exactly what Jesus claimed to do. On the last night of Jesus’ earthly life, He celebrated Passover with His disciples and established the ordinance of the Lord’s Supper. At that supper, He boldly announced, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you” (Luke 22:20).
So, we are the New Covenantal People of God. Jesus has fulfilled the prophecies. We now live in the age of fulfillment! God has now written His covenant on our hearts and minds as the Holy Spirit has taken up residence within us. It is truly a new day!
God is at work within you! He promised to do this. Listen to His voice as He guides your heart and mind.
