The Righteous Live by Faith

Hebrews 10:32-39

In Hebrews 10:25, we were encouraged to stay together as the people of God. We must not give up meeting together. This is not intended to make us feel guilty for missing a church service! This is an encouragement from the writer to remind us that we need each other. Living the Christian life is filled with challenges. It is too daunting to attempt alone! We need each other.

In our text today, the author demonstrates he is aware that these original readers had already endured some level of persecution because of their faith in Jesus. Most scholars have concluded that these original readers were Jewish Christians living in Rome in the first century. As Jews, they had experienced a certain level of religious freedom and toleration in the Roman Empire. However, once they converted to Christianity, there had been some level of persecution. The writer is aware of this situation.

He is encouraging them to stay true to their Christian commitment. Even if it cost them in this life, there are greater rewards in the life to come. In the midst of this encouragement, he reminds all of us that God has designed us to live by faith. He quotes Habakkuk 2:4 to substantiate his conclusion. God wants His people to live. And—He wants us to live by faith.

As you already know, I love this truth. We have been designed by God for life. He breathed the breath of life into Adam. God is the great life-giver. He is the Author of life. He sent Jesus so that we might live forever. Jesus declared that He came to give us abundant life (John 10:10). We have been redeemed by God so that we might live! We were buried with Christ by a baptism unto death and raised to live a new life (Romans 6:4).

Jesus is our Great High Priest. He has passed through the curtain into the heavenly Holy of Holies. He has sat down at the right hand of God. He has made it possible for us to be cleansed from our sin so that we might also enter into the holy presence of God. We now have the laws of God written on our hearts and minds. We are God’s people. We are deeply connected to him and to each other. Praise God! Let’s live!

Thank God today for the life He has secured for you. Do your best to live fully into that life!
