Hebrews 11 is one of those watershed passages in our Bible. Wow! It is the family photo album. This is the page where the writer flips through the pages of history and reminds us all of our great heritage as the people of God. It feels like we are seated in the living room of our homes and our parents are walking us through the old photo album. “This is your great-grandfather. I wish you could have known him!” And on and on it goes.
The writer delves back into Biblical history and calls forth example after example of men and women who served God well in their day. It is a roll call of the Hall of Fame. Actually, it is the Hall of Faith.
The refrain of this page in the Bible is . . . “by faith.”
These people all lived by faith. That is what distinguished them. It wasn’t their great earthly accomplishments, per se. It was their willingness to live by faith. They trusted God and honored Him in their lives.
What is faith? It is our confident hope in God. It is our ability to see without seeing! It is a calm assurance that God can be and should be trusted. It is a deep confidence in the character of God. It is a calm assurance that we can trust Him even if we don’t understand what he is doing at the time. Even if our circumstances don’t seem to indicate that He is at work---we still trust.
God has invited us to an amazing adventure. We have no idea where He may take us in life. We can’t see into the future. However, we believe in Him. We trust Him. We know that He is right all the time. We believe He knows what is best. We are confident in our hope in Him and His will. That is how we are to live.
Need some encouragement? Then, sit down with the writer of Hebrews and let him flip through the family photo album! Let him tell you about Abel, Enoch, Abraham, Sarah, Moses, Rahab ---- and a host of others!
You can be confident in your hope today! God was at work in the lives of those who have gone before us, and He is at work in your life as well.
Take the time to reflect on your heritage of faith today. Who has inspired you?
